The word meaning is, “Thus spoken”

Itihasa means history; it is the history of the land written with a purpose to spread dharma among common people.

Puranas and Itihasas are often grouped together for their purpose and similarity content but they are structurally different. The Puranas are written during various periods by various authors but edited for the first time by Krishna Dvaipayana Vyasa. Itihasa is with structural order and written by a single person. Ramayana , Uttara Ramayana , Mahabharata , Harivamsa are the prominent Itihasas.
