Brahma Purana
ब्राह्म पुराण
brāhma purāṇa
Once during the twelve year long satra held at Nimisharyna, the participating sages raised few questions to the narrator of Purana, the Sutha Maharishis as to Who created the universe?, who is its preserver? And who will destroy it? The Brahma Purana begins with the answer to this trivalent question. The immediate answer Sutha Maharishis gave is, Vishnu as Narayana slept over the infinite water and that is the beginning of creation. The Brahma Purana thereafter gives a detailed sketch on the primary creation and secondary creation and other genealogical details of famous families.
Brahma Puran gives importance to the event of creation of the universe. Just like other Puranas Brahma Purana is also in dialogue form with Brahma himself narrating the stories to Daksha Prajapathi and Narada. Narada told this story to Veda Vyasa. And from Vyasa his disciple Romaharhana learned and published in the conclave of Rishies in Nimisharanya forest. Brahma Puran is also addressed as Adi-Puran, since it assume first position in the list of 18 Major Purans that Veda Vyasa have authored. The text is divided into Purvabhaga (former part), Uttarabhaga (later part) and a concluding part known as Brahmottara Purana. All together Brahma Purana have 246 chapters and 13,700 Shlokas. The first part gives importance to Lord Vishnu and second part, to Lord Siva. Surya was also given much importance in this Purana.
