Meaning of "vritti"

In General

A brief explanation on an original work is called as vritti. Many of the original text are very terse and difficult to understand without an explanatory note like Vritti. Vritti is a short gloss and is different from bhasya which large in size and contain personal view of the author.

An example is Bodhayana's Vritti on the Brahma Sutras. ( Bhodayana is believed to be a disciple of Vyasa. Sankaracharya and Ramanuja refer to this vritti in their Brahmasutra bhasya)
