Alakshmi is opposite of Lakshmi and is also called as Nirrti. Nirrti or Alakshmi is not evil or all bad but it creates poverty, ugliness and adharma. The Vedic concept is that when divinity or Lakshmi is not cared Alakshmi is bound to happen. Nirrti is the dikpalaka of south west corner.

Veda

Alakshmi is a Vedic goddess said in many Vedic hymns like Sree Sukta.

Purana

While churning of Palazhi the goddess Alakshmi appeared first, there after only Ma Lakshmi came out. So Alakshmi is called elder sister of Ma Lakshmi.
