Chanakya also known as Kautilya or Vishnu Gupta was believed to be the chief minister in the court of Chandragupta Maurya who ruled the subcontinent in the 4th Century BC. The legends says the success of Chandra gupta’s in ascending the throne is by clever planning of a brahmin intellectual called Chanakya.

He wrote Artha sastra, a dharmasastra with practical wisdom. But Arthasastra make no refence of on Chandragupta or his empire might be his work during his internship in Takshasila University. Artha sastra which contain 6000 hymes is a comprehensive manual on how a state ought to be ruled and governed by Monarchy. All the problems associated with monarchical form of governance are discussed in Arthasastra.
