Swami Ramananda (1300-1411 CE) was born to an orthodox Kanyakubja Brahmin couple Puyasadana and Susila in the holy city Prayag (Utter Pradesh). He was well educated in Sanskrit and Vedic literature and received sanyasa from Raghavananda, a sanyasin of Visistadvaita tradition of Ramanuja

Ramananda lived during the most difficult time of Hindu civilization. Atrocities by Muslim rulers were at maximum during his time. Hinduism in Northern India found a savior in him as his bhakti movement by village folk became a counter product to rapid conversion of Hindus to Islam. By preaching devotion to Lord Ram, Ramananda in fact democratized Hindu Religion, which was the need of the hour. He did not believed in the supremacy of any cast and encouraged free dining among his followers irrespective of their caste labels. He wrote and spoke in the language that common man understand and express themselves. Ramananda thus evolved a sect that subordinated the importance of rites and ceremonies and of pilgrimages and fasts, and of learning and contemplation, to the higher excellence of worship by means of unalloyed faith. Ramananda preached no esoteric doctrine reserved only for the privileged few. His mission was a silent mass movement of unprivileged that can defy and protect itself from any state restriction.

Ramananda accepted disciples from all class of society without looking into their cast, religion or social status. His famous disciples include Raidas (a shoe maker), Kabirdas (a weaver and a Muslim), Sena (a barber), Padmavati (a woman), Bhagat Pipa (a Rajput king), Sukhanand (a Brahmin), Anandananda (a Brahmin), Danna (a Jat peasant).

Ramananda is considered as greatest of the Vaishnavite sages. Ramanandi Sampradaya, the most popular Vaishnavite monastic order is known after his name. Since he preferred to write in local language and dialect, Hindi literature recognizes him as one of their earliest writers. Though very popular in his time, he spends most of his time in Kasi and moved out very rarely.
